Gewürztraminer 2011
Description
This off-dry Gewürztraminer presents Turkish delight and citrus flower aromas on the nose, followed by oriental spice notes. The palate offers an abundance of crushed rose petal supported by citrus and spice fl avours. Texturally rich, this wine has great length. The flavours should develop and integrate even further with two to three years careful cellaring.
Viticulture
Fruit for this Gewürztraminer was sourced from a small block on the southwest corner of our vineyard, closest to the Omaka River. As this is only the fourth vintage from the block, the young vines are only just hinting at their future potential… and what a future! The fruit is spectacular already.
Our 2011 vintage produced lovely Gewürztraminer. The fruit was showing hints of spice from just after veraison, so picking was mostly a matter of waiting for that precise moment when the flavour couldn’t get any better, harvesting in mid-April.
Vinification
The fruit was destemmed, gently pressed and cold settled. The resulting clear juice was then brought down to a suitably cool temperature and inoculated with yeast. We stopped fermentation when the desired balance between sugar and acid was achieved. The wine was immediately racked and finally filtered prior to bottling.
