Pinot Gris 2011

Metro 100 Wines for Summer  "one of the highest scoring pinot gris [..] Our panel was impressed by the fruit concentration and length of flavour."  -  Metro Dec 2011

Description

Fruity and smooth, this pale straw Pinot Gris opens with pear and apple skin on the nose, complemented by floral and spice hints. The palate presents flavours of ripe stewed pear with a touch of dry spice and Granny Smith apple. The wine has a rich textural finish with lingering pear and light spicy characters. The flavours should develop and integrate even further with one to two years careful cellaring.

Viticulture

Our Pinot Gris is planted in what used to be a Pinot Noir block of our vineyard where the variety is showing its cousin’s aptitude for the site. This young block is beginning to come into its own and is already showing great promise.

In 2011 the Marlborough vintage was a bit of a slow starter. Our Pinot Gris benefited from lowered crop levels and healthy canopies. This allowed full ripening and excellent fruit quality in a reasonably early harvest in mid-April.

Vinification

The fruit was destemmed, gently pressed and cold settled. The resulting clear juice was then brought down to a suitably cool temperature and inoculated with yeast. We stopped fermentation when the desired balance between sugar and acid was achieved. The wine was immediately racked and finally filtered prior to bottling.
